How to Clean Your Refrigerator Gaskets

Refrigerator gaskets are designed to keep warm air out and cold air in your refrigerator in order to prevent product spoilage and excessive energy use. To prolong the life of your refrigerator gaskets, they should be cleaned on a regular basis. Buildup of dirt and debris in the folds of your gasket will cause development of mold and the eventual breakdown of the gasket itself.

Follow these simple steps:

1.   Use a soft bristle brush along the top and sides of your door gasket to clear out any debris that may have built up in the gasket folds.

2.   Make a mixture of one tablespoon of liquid dish detergent and one cup of warm water. Make sure the detergent is diluted. Avoid using chemical or citrus-based ingredients.

3.   Moisten a soft cloth with the detergent solution and wipe down all surfaces of the gasket.

4.   Use another soft cloth dampened with water to wipe down the entire gasket.

Depending upon equipment use, gaskets should be cleaned on a regular basis. Doing so will prevent gasket failure and keep your refrigerator operating properly.
